SEO, how to make your site more SE friendly

Jun 16th 2008, 03:19 AM 0 raters

One of the things I first learned when I took my first class on "how to build a web site" a couple of years ago was that I should have everything gathered up and organized that I want to use on my page before I started building it. I was told to have it all planned out on paper before I ever started to build it in my editor.

The problem I ran into was I didn't know where I was going with the site until after I got started. One reason for this was that I didn't know what affiliates would except me. My main reason for building my web sites was to make a living off of them. First I would find a domain name that a lot of people did searches on. It also had to be a topic that I was interested in myself so that I had some experience about my topic to start off with. I also had to do research on that topic to find a lot more information on that topic so that I could give people something of interest to read and also point them to more sites where they could find out more in depth information on different subtopics within my main topic. I get ideas for more pages depending on what I find that is interesting to me and hopefully interesting to people who come back to my site and work in my affiliate ads as well. What kind of affiliates that are interested in me advertising for them influences me to add pages that will highlight their products and be products people finding my site will be interested in. Then keep track of what products sell and go with that. Sometimes what I think will be a big hit and promote doesn't do much on my sites so I switch with what does to well. This keeps me happy and the folks that I'm affiliated with happy.

I started my AnimalPicture.us site with my index page ( home page ) about all kinds of animals. My original idea was to put up a variety of animal pictures and lots of great links where people could find different kinds of information about animals. While looking for animal pictures ads to put on my new site I realized my index page was getting too big so I started a second page giving it the same name for the title. While I was building it I decided to make the new pages individual animal pages. So I changed it to one kind of animal, Penguins. I changed the title at the top of the page to Penguins, but the URL name stayed the same.  http://animalpicture.us/Animal_Picture_us.html

Once I decided to make my web site in this style I made the next animal page about elephants. Now this time I knew exactly what I was going to make the page about so when I build it the URL is   http://animalpicture.us/Elephants.htm

It never occurred to me at first how the search engines might look at my site pages. I have the index page as animal picture and that is good because that is what it is about but now I have this Penguin page with nothing about Penguins in the URL, even though I changed the title of it to Penguins. So that page may not help me, and could even hurt my ratings over all. When a search engine indexes your site and pages on your site they take into consideration your URL, the title of your page and the content on your page. To get a good rating all these should match up. Your page URL is going to show up in the search engine results so it should have the title of your page within it. Plan your site out well from the beginning for best results. Have your overall plan in place then build your site. Lay it out on paper first then organize what you need to do to build a great looking and search engine friendly site.

I'm learning what to do as I go along. One thing I have learned is to make your pages with the search engines in mind. Most of your traffic is going to come to your site by way of the search engines. The more traffic you have the more likely you are to make a sale. The more relevant your site is to what that traffic is looking for the more sales you are going to make. To succeed with your site learn as much as you can about how and keep the search engines looking favorably at your site.

Here is a site that will give you a lot of good information on SEO ( Search Engine Optimization) tips.

Sites I've been working on

May 4th 2008, 05:56 PM 0 raters

I got a couple more new web sites up now. My newest one is Antique Future.net I still have some more work to do on it I need to get more links up in the middle section of it. Eventually I want to get some pages up on it of pictures of my antiques, most of them were from my mother. I want to sell them and figure the best way to advertise them will be to put up a web page with them on it and post information about them so people will know what the history is for them. I have another domain called Antique Dish.net but don't have anything publish for it yet, I think that will be the one I have mostly for the pictures of my antiques.

The other site I just got put up right before Antique Future is called Kid Poster.net it has lots of posters for kids and great information links that should be helpful for the parents and fun ones for the kids.

I have three Bible study sites now.. Bible Study Resources.net Biblical Names.info and Jesus Poster.net that I co-own with a good friend of mine. I also have some studies up on his Bible Parable.net site. I have a lot more information I want to put up on the Biblical Names site. Pictures of different people in the Bible and more information about them and their name. You get a deeper meaning from the scriptures if you know what their name means.

I love animals so I've put up several animal sites. Dog Funny.net Funny Dog.us Funny Cat.us Animal Picture.us Horse Picture.org Frog Picture.net I have one more domain called Funny Animal.us but I don't have anything published for it yet. Once you get a site started up you still have to work on it add more pages and update links. That can keep you pretty busy with just one site let alone a lot of sites.

I also love trees for I've put up several Tree sites. Buckeye Tree.net is my most popular one. I also have one called Chestnut Tree.net that goes along well with Buckeye Tree. I have Flowering Dogwood.net Bonsai Bonsai.net both up and running, but I don't have any thing up yet for Hickory Tree.net or KarensTrees.com. Karens Trees.com is one that I want to have pictures of my own trees in my own yard and tell about when I planted them, how they look now 30 years later and how they have fit in or changed the look of my yard.

I have Picture of World Map.net site too where I'm putting up pages for different countries and places around the world. It's a lot of fun to work on, I learn a lot about different countries each time I build a new page for it.

Then I have one forum for all my sites. YourForumTopic.com it has other topics for just about anything besides just being a forum for my web sites. I wanted a way that people who visit my sites could ask questions or leave comments. I thought the easiest way to do that would be to just have one forum to keep track of instead of lots of forums, one for each site. This way each site does have it's own forum area but I can keep track of them all in one place. I have other interesting things and information that I run across the on the net and this gives me a place to post about them without having to build a web site that fits the subject. I can easily fit any subject into my forum by putting up a new board for it or put it under general topics.

domain names and hosting

Mar 24th 2007, 03:31 AM 0 raters

A free site isn't the best way to go. Here is my first site. http://www.geocities.com/karencharin0/There is an ad on the right side of the page, but you can close that box so
that you can see the whole site. The name doesn't do much
to let people know what your site is about and it won't do very well in search
engines. So I bought the domain name www.Biblestudyresources.net.
and had my friend host it for me. I kept the first one because it has a cyber bot
that I am teaching to answer Bible questions. It doesn't get very much traffic so
I have a lot of time to teach Hal answers to questions. My second site has basically
the same front page, and then I added more pages. It gets about 8 people a day now. I have two more free sites that I play around with, but you are limited as to how you
can use those sites. I have several more sites that I bought the domain name for and
also have my friend host for me, www.dogfunny.net was the second one I made and it
is still growing. I get about 10-30 people a day there now. I buy my domain names at go daddy, they will also host you for free with their ad at the
top. So I have one site hosted with them for free but it does have my domain name.
www.pictureofworldmap.net I have several domain names that I don't have anything up yet, I"m still just planning them.
When I found out about buying domain names, I didn't realize how long it was going to take
me to actually build the sites and how much time I would be putting in on rebuilding pages
for the sites I already had up. I thought my sites looked a certain way, then found out if I looked at them with a different
screen resolution set, and in different browsers the pages looked different. On dogfunny, I
just got done rebuilding the page on dog toys. When I built it originally I used different tables
for different dog toys, I had 4 sections of tables, The pages looked fine in my MSN explorer
browser but when I looked at them with Internet explorer browser I seen that the tables were
out of alignment. The first table looked ok, but you had to scroll to the right to see the next
table then more to the right to see the next table..... I had no idea it looked like that in a different
browser. Then I looked at them in the netscape browser. They were all lined up ok, but I had
one or two or three.... page length between the tables that were just blank space people had
to scroll down in order to see the next group of toys....... ( Might be a big reason why I haven't
made many sales LOL) but I'm learning from my mistakes and I'm working on correcting them.
I got the dog toys page rebuilt and published with just using one table for all the toy ads.And I'm
working on the dog clothes page now. They were the two worse pages when I looked at them
in different browsers. I also found out that if you use a picture that is too wide for the column that it stretches out the
column and then people have to scroll back and forth to see the whole thing. So now I'm making
the pictures smaller so that they fit better in the columns. I was looking at my pages with my
computer set at the highest resolution and didn't realize that the pictures were too big when viewed
with the normal middle setting for resolution. I will probably start out my other sites on the free go daddy hosting, then when they start getting
noticed in the search engines I'll move them to the paid hosting so that I can just use my own
ads. Except I did just buy a new domain name the other day YourForumTopic.com.... it's my first
.com name !!!!! and it will be my first forum. I will start that one out on the paid hosting I think it would
be hard to move a whole forum because of all the pages. I want to use the forum site as a forum for
all my web sites, so there will be a wide variety of subjects in this forum to start out with, then I thought
I would ad new topics that people suggest. Like if they have a site about shoes, they can start a topic
for their site and keep it updated with things going on at their site. I don't know when I'll get it started
up though, I'm still trying to decide what script I want to use for it.

My first web page !

Sep 12th 2006, 09:01 PM 0 raters

Tue Sept 12 2006
My first web site
I got my first computer , that I could get on the web with,
in August of 2001. I've met a lot of great people on the web.
This is my 3rd computer in that amount of time.
I'm pretty ruff on them I guess. I fried the other ones...
I've started to build a web site !
I did it in two colors.
blue
http://www.karensfarm.electforum.com/
and fire light
http://www.geocities.com/karencharin0/
I had a hard time trying to get them to "publish"
or "up load" to the servers
so that other people could see them when they clicked on my link.
But I did finally get them there. The geocities free space site
has a tool on it's site that will upload your page .
And you can use their other tools to set up your own page for free too or
download software to compose one and then upload it like I'm doing.
Feel free to tell me what you think of what I have built so far, comments and
suggestions are welcome as I learn how to build my own site !
Building this site will be good for getting all my favorite links all organized and all
together in one place.
And I think a lot of them people will be really happy to find out about some of the free
software Bible study tools they can get if they didn't
hear something about it yet.
I love having the free e-sword Bible search engine and I've used it for a long time and
Highly Recommend it !!!!! It even has Strong's number's and Strong's Greek and Hebrew
dictionaries so that you can see what the word was originally before it was translated
into our KJV Bible. You can down load lots of other free modules for it too , more Bible
translations , more dictionaries , commentaries, books, study notes........
That is why it is first thing listed under Bible study tools.
I know a lot of other people who use it and recommend it also.
I only have the first page up
so the page 2 page 3 page 4 buttons don't work yet. At least not
until I get tem built and published. I had started on the second page and was having trouble getting
it to link back to the home page, for some reason. I "set an anchor" so it would know where to come
back to but it just didn't quit get it...
The composer I used is called sea monkey. It was a free download.
I'm switching to a different one though, it was a free download too, but it looks like it is better set
up to work with. I even keeps track of everything that you use when you are setting up a web page. All the things I used to build
the first page are scattered all over my computer. I'll have to find them all again to put in this new one. But then they will always be right
there to use fro when I want to build a new page. I hope I can store things I run across on the web that I will use later. I haven't worked with it
enough to know what all it can do yet. I will let you know as I go along. I'll keep everyone updated on how building my first web site goes. Try building one along with me !!!!! It's free to try !
Karen
